Time plan

This is the time plan that I have written to organise to creation and development of my website. The advantage of creating a time plan is that I am then able to work in a more structured way

Evaluation

In this project, capture, my task was to experiment with different forms of capture that would be finally presented within a website.

My subject for this project was photography as my main form of capture, although I did also experiment in different forms of capture such as mark-making, scanning, drawing and typography. The reason that I chose photography was that there is a lot to learn about it and many ways of finning out information within the college as well as online, and by using all of these I could make my research and findings more valid.

The first sept of the project was to decide which capture method I would focus on. I did this by try out different methods, and once I had decided on photography I was able to go into move depth within that medium and explore the work of other photographers. Another large part of the project was building the website witch would hold the work. This took a lot of planning as the structure and also the design had to be closely considered, as I did not want it to contrast to dramatically with the content on the page.

I think that my biggest successes in this project would be building the website, as I feel I got the right balance between the design of the site and the content. I think that another area of success in my project would be the final logo that I designed. I think the logo represents the style of "Podium" well as it is clean, compact, neat and easy to read yet individual and recognisable.

I think the main thing that I will take away from this project is the confidence to try out different techniques and not be afraid of pushing a medium to it boundaries to see what I can accomplish with it. I think that this is something that I will consider for every future project that I will take on.

If I was to start this project again I would started investigating other artist earlier as this could have impacted my work more heavily or inspired me to do things slightly differently.

This project helped me learn some cool little tricks in Photoshop, introduced me to 3DS Max, 3D modeling, techniques for getting better photographs and a basic introduction to typography. In all the areas that I just stated I will take away tips a techniques that will dramatically impact my future work and speed up my work flow, which I think is a very important thing.

Planning a capture.

I am planning on capturing a photo of people moving within the Drake Circus shopping center.

For this capture I will need permission from the security in the center and I will bring my student ID as proof

The equipment that I plan to use will include, a camera, tripod and Photoshop to adjust levels, contrast, ect if needed.

These are the final two images that I think came out the best, however if I was to do the shoot again I would find a different vantage point, as you can see in the photos, I took these from behind a sheet of glass.

Tuesday, 8 February 2011

I created this 3D image in Photoshop using the "Repousse" and "3D postcard from layer" features. I also added a light to give a shadow and reflection to add to the effect. The final set in the production was to change the render setting to "Stereo Type", this makes the "59graphics" change into blue and red so that when viewed with 3D glasses the text and background has more depth.

Creating a 3D image.

To create a 3D image that is comparable with the anaglyph glasses you must do as follows:

Import your image into Photoshop,
Duplicate it,
Go image, adjustments, curves.
In the curves menu Change the red channel to "output: 0" and "input: 251", them click ok.
Click on the other duplicated layer and go again to the curves dialogue box, but this time change the Green and Blue channels and apply the same input and output as the the Red to both.
To the layer on top in the layers pallet set the blending mode to screen.
The final step is to put on your glasses and adjust the position of the layers to get the depth that you want.

Shredder 1.0

Shedder 1.0 is a web application, that when you enter a website address, it returns the web site with all the HTML code rearranged. For example the image above shows the Google website in the shredder application, with the logo repeated and dis-formed and the links visible.

This is an example of how capture can translate into other areas such as data and push the boundaries of technology to create something unique and original.

Capture with words (Wordle.net)

As a group we described each other with single words or phrase. We then copied the words into a website application called Wordle, which creates a frequency graph. You can play with the colours and layout of the graph. This method of capture is very different to what I have previously researched but just as effective. If I present the words in a typographic format I am then combining two methods of capture.

Design Layout for Website.

This is the layout plan for my website. It include a rough guide to where certain elements will go, I will also use this as a rough size guide.

Podium magazine cover.

This is my concept for a magazine cover to promote the new Podium "Winter Collection". I used the Podium logo in a slightly darker grey to the background. For "Winter Collection" I used a layer mask to expose a photo of some snowy mountains, this also gives the page some colour and makes it the main focus of the page. For the "winter Collection" and the date in the top left I played with the leading and kerning to get either a dense block of text or to make the letters far apart.

For my concept of the double page spread I chose to separate the pages into a photo, to convey the product, and text which would contain the information about the products. I set the background on the right to a bright yellow to give the page some colour and contras with the photo, also the black text text sits well on this colour. I used the same "Winter Collection" from the front page without the mask of the photo. Down the center of the two pages i put in some orange and yellow block the help connect the two pages, and make them look more like they are part of the same topic. I also use the work "HELLO*" to connect the two pages.

Creating a website in Flash.

First I created a new action script 2 file and added 4 layers, they are called background, content, buttons and actions. Next I made key-frames for background, content and buttons at frames 10, 20, 30 and added blank frames up to frame 40. For the buttons layer I inserted blank frames up to frame 40.

In the content layer I added a title to each of the key-frames and a blue background to each of the key-frames.

The next step was to add and script the buttons. I inserted pre-set buttons and to them added script that said:

on (release) {
gotoAndStop(1);
}

The number in the brackets is changed to determine the position of the play-head on the time line when the button is clicked.

To the actions layer key-frames I added the script stop (). This means that when one of the buttons is clicked and the play-head moves to the chosen frame then  play-head stop.

To add text to my webpages I have to create a text box and into that I need to put a scroll bar so that when there is too much text for the box, the user can scroll down the box the see the rest of the text.

Podium logo animation.

To create this logo animation I used Photoshop's frame by frame animation tool. I broke up mu logo into the three colours and set them at different sides of the frame. I then created a new frame put them in their final places , I then selected the two frames and tweened them over 60 frames to create a smooth movement.

Website research (pinxai.com)

pinxai.com is a good example of a site that displays it's content well. When the user first enters the site they are presented with the screen above, from there they can click on the image they like and are then shown to a page that contains all the information about the piece pluse some of the thinking behind it.

From the websites that I have researched this is my favourite as it is very simple and and as a whole I love the way that it is presented.

A great visual feature of this site is how the owner has photographed the print material. This gives it a unique look and distinguishable between the digitally view work.

Website research (pulchry.com Typography)

This is a good example of using typography within a website. On their opening page they have their large typographic logo in pink set on a dark background, which makes it "pop". Beneath the logo they have a quote that they think represents their company well, followed by some of their latest work, which gives the user an insight to their style of work.

Website research (pralinenschachtel.de)

This is a blog design that I quite like, although it would not be suitable for the style that I am designing for, I like the illustration at the top of the page and the layout below that is not divided into boxes but just left to sit naturally as it is typed.

Website research (caramelink.com)

This website uses a large detailed graphic at the top of the page and block colours, in the layout, to section up the site. When the user clicks on the button below the logo that says "our latest work" the page smoothly scrolls down the page to show some boxes with their work.

Website research (asos.com menu)

For the menu at the top of my website I have decided to replicate that of the asos.com website. When the user rolls over the menu with their mouse, a drop down comes down. Where it is different to the usual drop down is that it stretches much further than it needs to, to create a white column through the image behind.

Logo design.

This is a symbole that does not have any writing. I did this variation as mant companies, such as nike, use only a symbol to represent their company.

The symbol that I has made is a lightning bolt. I think that I will use it within my website to create patterns.
